Retire to Mexico – Mexico Adventures
with Joel and Sue, Part 1
How a Vacation Turned Into Early Retirement in Mexico.
In life you never know what is coming up next, sometimes
there disappointments and sometimes pleasant surprises.
For years, Joel and Sue (aka Dick and Jane), continually
asked themselves while on vacation in various places in the
U.S., “Could we live here?”
Little did they know that this line of questioning was a
prelude to moving and retiring to Ajijic-Chapala, Mexico.
This is our story of how we found Lake Chapala and moved
from Los Gatos, California to Ajijic, Mexico.
A Puerto Vallarta Yoga Beach Holiday Turns Into
Ajijic Travel and More… Retirement
In January 2001, Joel and Sue were essentially burnt out of
working long hours and long weeks in Their Silicon Valley
consulting business and needed a break. By chance, they heard
about a fabulous yoga retreat Puerto Vallarta, Mexico taught by
one of their favorite yoga instructors, Thomas Michael
Fortel.
When opportunity knocks sometimes you need to answer the
door
This was after all initially a beach vacation in PV, Mexico
to recharge our batteries and wound up as an adventure of a
lifetime to living full time in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico on the
shores of Mexico’s largest lake, Lake Chapala. And as Americans
retired in Mexico to boot!
Over the years, we had vacationed at Mexican beach resorts
frequently. But this January 2001 vacation was different,
something very weird occurred during our beach vacation in
Mexico.
We are outgoing and often met several new friends while on
vacation and PV was no different. But this time we started
meeting many people that were living a life that previously had
only dreamed of, living a relaxed and comfortable life …. But
in Mexico.
They were on vacation in
Mexico just as we were, several lived in another part on
Mexico and were just vacationing at the beach on the Pacific
ocean. Home for them was somewhere in the interior of Mexico,
the Colonial highlands.
Amazing, English speaking foreigners, mostly Americans and
Canadians, retired
and living in Mexico?
Joel became captivated, he need to find out about these
early retirees. What was this Shangri-La in the heart of
Colonial Mexico. Was it real or just a fantasy?
